The Right way - The Word Only

He found [Jacob] in a desert land, 
and in the waste howling wilderness; 
He led him about, 
He instructed him, He kept him as the apple of his eye. 
As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, 
spreadeth abroad her wings, 
taketh them, beareth them on her wings:

 O give thanks unto the Lord , for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

Biography - Lady Jane Grey - Nine Day Queen of England - by Faith Cook.

One of my favourite biographers is Faith Cook. She was the daughter of China Inland Missionaries and had a varied upbringing. However her love of her Lord flows through her biographies. This was one of the first which I read, a gift from a dear friend. They’re obtained from most bookstores, or online if you’re like me, and none around. You can buy it as ebook too, I think, but I do like a real book in my hands.

Lady Jane Grey has often been called the 'Tudor Pawn' but to see her as one whose life was simply moved around by others is totally inadequate. This is no simplistic life and death of a sixteen-year-old girl. In order to understand the full tragedy and triumph of her life it is vital to grasp the far-reaching political and religious changes that were shaking England at that time.
The Reformation touched the whole population; from palace to university; from emerging town to peasant cottage.
Like the pieces of a jigsaw, the pieces come together to give a picture of a girl with outstanding natural abilities, whose strength of character and remarkable faith shine out despite the darkness that often surrounded her.
Execution at age 16, Jane paid an awful price for a throne she did not seek.

It is an encouraging and inspiring account of an intelligent, strong and faithful young lady, with a zeal for her Lord despite the evil plots of others. It gives details surrounding the efforts of  godly men and women used of the Lord to further the reformation.
Lady Jane Grey had no other ambitions in life other than to advance the gospel.
Despite the hardships of being unloved by her parents and those close to her, the Lord brought increasingly godly men to teach and encourage her to remain strong and even more amazing at such a young age.
Sadly she did not live out her full life span. She understood she was an vessel of the Lord's and He had determined her days.

Her testimony rings down through the centuries, to encourage those who come after,  to be true to their Lord and Saviour, to persist in their own small corner & shine for the Lord.
Her greatest treasure was her small copy of a Greek New Testament. On her last night she inscribed it with these words for her younger sister Katherine:
"I have sent you good sister Katherine, a book which, although it is not outwardly framed with gold, yet inwardly it is of more worth than precious stones. It is the book, dear sister, of the law of the Lord. It is His testament and last will which he bequeathed unto us wretches; which shall lead you into the paths of eternal joys; and if you with good mind read it, and with earnest mind do purpose to follow it, it will bring you an immortal and everlasting life. It shall teach you to live and learn you how to die".
This last statement is even more touching in that the very next day she experienced just that .. how to die.
Even 400 years later we can see into the darkness of the Tower room and see the bright faith of this young woman. Her words on scaffold included:
" I do look to be saved by no other means but by the mercy of God in the blood of His only Son Jesus Christ."
Her faith rang out against popery and faith by works of the era of Queen Mary, the Catholic Queen.

It's a good thing to look to these heros and heroines of the faith. They give our life perspective.
As they were weak, but strong in Jesus, so can we likewise follow on! 

".. Not by might, nor by power but by my spirit saith the Lord."  Zechariah 4:6b

I am with thee - the Word Only

The LORD shall guide thee continually, 

and satisfy thy soul in drought, 

and make fat thy bones: 

and thou shalt be like a watered garden, 

and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

For this God is our God for ever and ever: 

He will be our guide even unto death.

A Coming King

As believers Prayer and Word are essential to our life and spiritual growth. There is another necessary aspect to our daily walk.

That's the upward look!

Part of my life verse is: 

Hebrews 12:2

"Looking unto Jesus ..."

Life Passage is verses 1 - 6. 

Look at them. How rich are they! Hebrews 12:1-6

"Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us , and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

 [2] Looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

[3] For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

[4] Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.

[5] And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

[6] For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

**Verse 1 ".. surrounded or encompassed by so  great cloud of witnesses" ... watching us! 

Who are they?

The previous chapter Hebrews 11 is the FAITH chapter. 

It speaks of those who've walked in Faith before us - these are witnesses of earthly battles.

**  Key part of this verse is the laying aside of the sin that does so easily beset us, trip us up ... doing it daily, moment by moment.

SO important!

**THEN we can have the upward look.. "looking unto Jesus "

He is Author and Finisher. 

When He cried on the cross "it is finished"  He finished the perfecting of our salvation.

 "It is finished" = our salvation was paid! For us all and for all eternity.

** Verse 3: "CONSIDER HIM lest ye grow weary and faint in your minds."

Need perspective?

Consider Him.

Think it's hard going, you've it really tough?

Consider Him.

Look into that thorn-scarred face, look at those nail-scarred feet hands, that spear-thrust side! 

Been spat upon, beaten, buffeted, mocked, in a purple robe lately?

"Consider Him"...

Our discipline (verses 5, 6) is really, really good.

Those hands feet etc show His Love. 

As do the hard things in my life, God has a higher end in view than my earthly view.

Hard is definitely not enjoyable.

But hard is really, really good for us spiritually.

According to #Horatius Bonar, a Scottish hymn-writer:

"Suffering is the family badge of all true believers as they follow Christ, the Man of Sorrows."

"In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." 

1 Thess. 5:18 

Think your way is hard?

Yes! it really, really is.

However, we are not beaten or killed for our faith. The tongue hurts, the load we bear is so unfair and so heavy, the illness so debilitating, but its all temporal, temporary!

I'm realising more and more how little time we have.

We are but a BLINK compared to eternity. 

But we're a redeemed, blood-bought child by faith in Jesus.

Precious.

Hard things = discipline = learning = very good.

As I've had medically 6 close calls, the brevity of life, that it may end with my chronic condition at any time is something I've lived with since mid teens. The last time July 2016 (see here), through these times I've learnt so much.

I would never change one thing .. even the hard, sad, bad things.

God makes it worth it all, as we cling to Him. A child who cleaves to his parent allows nothing to come between.

This is walking as Jesus walked. He is our coming King!

Let us never ever forget that and live everyday of our life as if it was today He was coming!

"Look up and be ready to go up!" (Bro. Mac.)

"Amen, even so come, Lord Jesus."

It is no accident that these words are included at the end of last chapter in our Bible (Rev 22: 20.)

God wants us to have the upward look, looking with joy to the coming King of Kings.

The Word Only

Wonderful Words of Life - Philip Bliss, Biograph

This new blog is another learning curve. I wasn’t sure what the LORD was doing when I started this blog!
Knew it was to share the word of God with as many as able; the format was hazy. After prayer and thought I believe this is good balance:
** one post on LORD’s day will be deeper, a Devotional Bible study of some sort. 
As I’m in Oz it will probably publish on your Saturday in Europe or US.
** second post about mid week will be a shorter or easier to read post.
A hymn background or short biography for uplifting encouragement. Love the way biographies can help us refocus! That’s why I read a dozen of them for one novel. Novels may be good BUT you can’t beat real life stories from those who've gone before.

The composer and writer of the hymn (& title of this blog), “Wonderful Words of life” was Philip Bliss.  He wrote many hymns, composed the music to many more, yet his time of writing was very short. Rather like the Apostle Stephen his life was cut off prematurely to our limited, human eye.

“Wonderful Words of Life”*

“Lord, to whom shall we go?  Thou hast the words of eternal life” (John 6:68)                       
INTRO.:  A song which mentions the blessings that we can find in God’s word of life is “Wonderful Words of Life” The text was written and the tune (Words of Life) was composed both by Philip Paul Bliss, who was born in a log cabin near Rome in Clearfield County, PA, on July 9, 1838. He had a limited access to musical training but by using every opportunity God brought his way and much hard work he aquired good training.

He rode about rural Pennsylvania as a professional music teacher, conducting singing schools in the winter and continuing his own music education during the summers at the Normal Academy of Music at Geneseo, NY.  

Wanting to write hymns, his association with two Chicago evangelists caused him to give up his music teaching and to begin composing gospel songs for their crusades.  One of these evangelists was Dwight L. Moody, and the other, for whom Bliss became music director, was Daniel Webster Whittle.  Over the next eight years, Bliss became one of the foremost gospel musicians in the nation.  He wrote “Let the Lower Lights Be Burning.”  “Hold the Fort." “Almost Persuaded” et al.  Furnishing many songs for various collections of others, he went on to publish several hymnbooks of his own.  Some of his other well-known hymns “Hallelujah! What A Savior!”, “More Holiness Give Me,” “Whosoever Will,” “Once For All,” Hallelujah, ‘Tis Done,” “Dare to Be a Daniel,” “The Light of the World is Jesus,” and “Jesus Loves Even Me;”; tunes for Francis R. Havergal’s “I Gave My Life For Thee” and “I Bring My Sins to Thee,” Emily Oakley’s “What Shall the Harvest Be?”, Mary Brainard’s “He Knows,” and Horatio G. Spafford’s “It Is Well With My Soul;” and the text for “My Redeemer” with music provided by James G. McGranahan.

While at age 25 Bliss had been an impoverished music teacher making only $13 a month, by 36 he was earning a fortune with his royalties being counted in the tens of thousands of dollars, although he gave much of it away to charity.

 “Wonderful Words of Life” was produced in 1874 for the first issue of a religious paper named Words of Life, published by Fleming H. Revell in New York City, NY. 

Two years later, in 1876, after a grueling autumn or fall schedule, Mr. and Mrs. Bliss spent the Christmas holiday with their family in Rome, PA.  Leaving the children with relatives in Rome, they left for Chicago and an engagement at Moody’s tabernacle.  On Dec. 29, while they were riding their Chicago-bound express through Ohio, the bridge over a ravine near Ashtabula gave way, and seven cars crashed through the trestle.  They plunged into the icy riverbed below and burst into flame.  Bliss, just 38 years old at the time, survived the fall, escaped through a window, and crawled from the wreckage.  However, when he did not see his wife, he fought his way back through the fire into the burning mass in a vain effort to locate and rescue her.  Both of them perished in the flames, along with a hundred other people.    This song had its first hymnbook appearance in the 1878 Gospel Hymns No. 3.

1. Sing them over again to me, wonderful words of life; let me more of their beauty see, wonderful words of life; words of life and beauty teach me faith and duty. Refrain: Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life. Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life. 2. Christ, the blessed one, gives to all wonderful words of life; sinner, list to the loving call, wonderful words of life; all so freely given, wooing us to heaven. (Refrain) 3. Sweetly echo the gospel call, wonderful words of life; offer pardon and peace to all, wonderful words of life; Jesus, only Savior, sanctify forever. (Refrain)

I've greatly enjoyed the reading of Phillip Bliss' life. Just imagine chatting in heaven or even better singing in heaven!

* Prayer is Power, it brings about the Mighty action of the Almighty!

Blessings beyond measure from a reading just recently - again a verse leapt out at me.
Do we want "Power in prayer"?
Then look to the lovely LORD Jesus - He is our example .. especially in His prayer of John 17 (link)! This whole chapter is intercession on behalf of those who believe in Him, you and me by faith in Christ. His deep love is so evident. Not judgemental like my prayers are often.. but such love, compassion, understanding. Yes, He is God. We though as believers have the Holy Spirit of God, by faith in the Lord Jesus, as our Guide and Help.
Then I read verse 22:
"the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one"

As I read that I simply breathed: "Wow!" His glory is ours, by faith alone in Jesus!
Will we ever fully understand that before heaven?
1 Corinthians 13:12
"For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known."
We will see much more, understand much more than we get at this very moment in time.
That's what grace is.
... "grace, according to the measure of  gift of Christ."
Ephesians 4:7
"But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ."

However, grace like salvation must be appropriated to be ours..

*used
*applied by a willing, broken heart at the foot of the cross.
Am I truly willing I ask myself?
Always I seem to be holding back a little (or sometimes even a lot)...
I John 3:2
"Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as He is."
One day it will all be plain.

Yes, we are faithful waiting servants of Jesus, if we are indeed serving as best we can, with hearts glad to be where God has put us. That's real everyday faith at work.
So let us each and every day given us - *LOOK up and be ready to go up... our lamps all trimmed and burning bright!
This little light of mine I'm going to let it shine!
Anchor your heart in Word and prayer.
Praise our great God for His grace sufficient for you and me! As we take (appropriate for ourselves) His grace, then it IS sufficient for our needs! But not till then.. faith in action, as with salvation. For "when we are weak then we are strong".

* This saying and the title of this post were common exhortations by a dear faithful prayer warrior, now in glory. Bro Bruce McIntyre (Bro. Mac., from hereon in) was a son of China Inland missionaries. Saved aged 16, he prayed for eight hours a day over a map of the world. He was a great influence in my life and many others. May we likewise be an influence for good and for God.

I am Feeding on the Living Bread

When a baby we needed food to grow. We need Daily food now.

As a Christian we need to desire "the sincere milk of the word that ye may grow thereby".. and then in time we have hunger for the meat of the Word of God. This is needful for all spiritual growth.
 I read a number of devotions each day, also four chapters (approx. varies from 1 to 6 chapters if short.. or so). If you average 4 chapters a day you can read the Bible in a year.

As it's a new year let me put a challenge out there to read your Bible through in a year. 
This might sound flippant, but I was in my youth asked:
 "Do you want to get to heaven, and say, "Oops, sorry Habbakuk! (an O.T. minor prophet). I simply haven't found the time to read your God inspired words"! Pretty bad if only 3 short chapters, eh?

  Let us feed on the Living Bread, that we might glorify the Lord by our lives. 
This little chorus below is part of a hymn and I learnt the chorus along with many others as a child at the Beach Mission run by Scripture Union. It was here I was saved beside the seaside as a child. 

The seed of the word needs to be shared, we will never know how the Lord will take and use it.
How important it is to feed on the Living bread (Listen Here)!

People have said how well I know the Bible. I beg to differ. Any knowledge is of God. I've been saved 53 years, I've read the Bible that many times.
That is not special. 
Many, many more have done much more than that, even memorising whole books of the Bible.
However being constantly in the word and meditating on it means it goes in. The Spirit of God brings it to remembrance (John 14:26). I do actively memorise, but I know by God's grace much more than that.
Rubbish in, rubbish goes out.
God's word in our hearts, God's word comes out.
We reap what we sow!

As we read a passage or chapter a verse will leap out. You can meditate on it.. chew it over as in example below. 
I read the first verse.. then the other two came to mind.
Three quite different situations.

**"Peace, be still!" Mark 4:39 Jesus quietened the tossing boisterous waves. So He will in our life, calm troubled seas.

** "Be still and KNOW that I am God". Psalm 46:10 David, the fleeing warrior, the anointed "yet-to-be" king, knew he could only know God if he was still.

** "Sit still my daughter, till I know how the matter shall fall." Ruth 3:18. Ruth was learning in the trial of her life to wait on her new-found LORD God. 

Sitting still is not easy.
It takes real discipline.
Being still is not me.. unless I'm sick or reading a good book. 
However spiritually we need to be ready to hear the .."still, small voice".. Elijah learnt this the hard way. As we all generally do.
Elijah found it is then you hear the still small voice of God. 
1 Kings 19:11-13 
Vs 12 "And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice"..
Be ready to hear that still small voice through your day!

How?
Being in the Word, being in communication through prayer.

Truly be a woman of the Word & prayer.

Be of good cheer.
The Lord will strengthen you, encourage your heart as you look up to Him, read His word.
As you serve the King.

Praying for you to learn even more to love Jesus and follow Him all the way., our living example.

Edit: I've learned today through FB post and then some personal study with Hebrew lexicon just what is the original meaning of "Be Still" in Psalm 46:1. I'm quoting from Gesenius' Hebrew Lexicon.

Meaning: " leave off doing anything"

So in Ps 46:1 it means "leave off (your own attempts) and know..." how rich is that?

We are in our own efforts = nought. 

We must look alone to our God.

Wonderful Words of Life - Found in Jesus

Well, this is a first post of a new blog. The purpose of this blog is to share snippets of God’s word with you in brief devotional format several times a week.
If this interests you I do hope that you’ll follow along and join in with these posts. I also do illuminated verses which I will share from time to time. This is a good one to aim for every day in 2019. 

Why of the title? It’s from a hymn.

God’s Word is LIFE.. without the Living Word, Who is the Lord Jesus Christ (John 1:1-12) we have no hope of real life.

As it's a new year in 2019 its good to remember these words...
"This God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death." Psalm 48:14

"Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee." 
Psalm 55:22

Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. For your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. Matt. 6:25, 32

Hitherto hath the LORD helped us. I Sam. 7:12

"Hitherto hath the Lord helped us" is the translation of the word "Ebenezer".
We are encouraged to raise our Ebenezer in the hymn Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing:
Here I raise my Ebenezer;
Here by Thy Great help I've come;
"Here I raise my Ebenezer;
  Here by Thy great help I have come..."
A good thought to remember as we look to a new year.

As God has helped us in the past, so He will in time to come.
Till He comes.
